TURKEY  EARTHQUAKE  AFTERSHOCK  RELATED  EFFORT

Latest  Update:   December 5,  2011

On October 10, 2011 a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Turkey reportedly claimed more than 600 lives.  And on November 9, 2011 a 5.6 magnitude aftershock reportedly claimed another 40 or so lives.  It would be difficult to determine how many additional people were injured in connection with those two earthquakes.

This was not the first time that a highly destructive earthquake occurred in Turkey followed before too long by a destructive aftershock.  In the relatively recent past, on August 17, 1999 there was a tremendously destructive earthquake there followed by a highly destructive aftershock on November 12, 1999.

This present Web Page has been created in the hope of helping minimize potential fatalities, injuries, and property damage associated with any future powerful aftershocks for that October 10, 2011 Turkey earthquake.

To accomplish that, two steps that are presently being taken:

1.  Attempts are being made to get as many earthquake forecasters around the world as possible at least informally organized so that if any of them determine that another powerful earthquake could be headed for the Turkey area then that person or group will have at least some method of letting appropriate parties in Turkey know about that.

2.  Attempts are being made to identify government and nongovernmental organizations in Turkey that are both interested in learning about earthquake forecasting data and able to make effective use of those types of data.

The plan is to store update information related to this effort on this Web page.  Anyone interested in this effort who wishes to discuss it further can try contacting me at webmaster@earthquake-research.com.
